Our watermelons

Properties of the watermelon

The watermelons marketed by the Consortium come from the area around Mantua, specifically from the plain on the right side of the Secchia river. The area is traditionally suitable for this cultivation thanks to the particular soil which allows to obtain a very sweet and juicy product. The best fruits are obtained in presence of warm-temperate climate as the watermelon is a fruit which needs plenty of warmth, light and water. The soil must be medium textured, loose, rich in organic substances, deep and permeable.

Round, long and mini are the three available varieties of watermelon.

Cocomero

  • The watermelon is an excellent thirst-quencher; in fact, it is the fruit with the highest water content (93,5%)
  • Its caloric intake is very low (about half of that of all other varieties of fresh fruits)

The fruit Cucurbita Citrullus, commonly called watermelon, originally came from Tropical Africa where it can still be found wild. It is a plant that dates back to ancient times, when it was grown by the Egyptians along the banks of the Nile. From Egypt, it then spread to the Mediterranean Basin to finally arrive to Italy around the II-III century a.C.
The Crimson Sweet variety is particularly appreciated for its organoleptic properties. The skin is light green with deep and intense green stripes, the shape is long and narrow and not always symmetric. The bright-red flesh is firm, crisp and very sweet. The watermelon is undoubtedly the most thirst-quenching among all the summer fruits. Its flesh contains the 95% of water and has a good diuretic action.

The Mini Watermelon is a variety of watermelon put on market years ago. This fruit allows to rediscover the genuineness, the freshness and the pleasure of the most traditional summer fruit, satisfying, thanks to its small size, the needs of the modern consumer. The size gets smaller – the weight is actually around 2 or 3 kilos – but the watermelon is equally tasty and thirst-quenching. The flesh is red, crisp and despite its sweet flavor, the sugar content is very low, to the point that among all the fleshy fruits, the watermelon is the least caloric. It also has good quantities of vitamin A, C and potassium.
